Tanya Negrey
As one of the only art therapists in Canada with a masters degree, and one of the only art therapists in Canada who has studied at a top private American school, Tanya Negrey has been offering a professional, evidence-based practice in Saskatoon and area since 2000. Tanya has a Masters of Arts in art therapy from the highly accredited School of the Art Institute of Chicago, which offers one of the most rigorous art therapy programs in North America. She also holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio art and a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of Saskatchewan. Tanya can provide Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), a unique approach to psychotherapy that guides the client to replace the negative images in the mind that cause the symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress with positive images of the client’s choosing.
Tanya has varied and dynamic work experience, delivering mental health support for children in both school settings and privately with youth and social services; and working with people on issues including residential youth care, substance use, and inpatient/outpatient behavioural health services. She has also worked with homeless people, and has done adult art therapy workshops through various agencies.
She has spent many years at Muskoday First Nation and Muskeg Lake Cree Nation as an art therapist for the children and youth of the community. In addition to doing mental health strategy planning in consultation with the Chief, council, health director, and health staff, she ran a community open arts studio, held workshops, coordinated care with teachers and families, and did home visits.
Her mentors include Dr. Cathy Malchiodi — a leading international expert, writer, and educator in the fields of art therapy, expressive arts therapy, trauma and arts in healthcare — and the late Don Seiden — Professor Emeritus at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a pioneer in the field of art therapy.
Tanya is a practicing artist, whose work spans many media, including painting, drawing, multimedia, and traditional black and white photography using a darkroom. She has been making art her whole life.
She also has a great love of music — she plays the piano and saxophone, and is currently learning to play the guitar. While she is not a music therapist, she does like to incorporate music into her work.
